About City

Melbourne is the capital and most crowded city of the Australian condition of Victoria, and the second-most crowded city in Australia. The name "Melbourne" alludes to an urban agglomeration spreading over which includes the more extensive metropolitan region, and also being the regular name for its downtown area. The town is positioned on the massive typical cove of Port Phillip and ventures into the hinterlands towards the Dandong and Macedon mountain ranges, Morning ton Peninsula and Yarra Valley. It has a populace of 4,529,500 starting at 2015, and its occupants are called Melbournians.

Greater Melbourne’s area of approximately 9900 km² of suburbs spread more than 40 km to the south, 30 km to the east, 20km to the north and sprawl across vast, flat basalt plains to the west. Melbourne’s art reflects the distinctive life of our city, and also helps make it what it is: a confident cultural capital with a global reputation for its diversity, energy and creativity. City of Melbourne plays an important role in the arts, fostering creative experimentation by encouraging and funding artists, promoting participation, and bringing art and people together in the heart of the city. Melbourne has a temperate oceanic climate with warm to hot summers and cool winters. Melbourne is well known for its changeable weather conditions, mainly due to it being located on the boundary of hot inland areas and the cool southern ocean. This temperature differential is most pronounced in the spring and summer months and can cause strong cold fronts to form. These cold fronts can be responsible for varied forms of severe weather from gales to thunderstorms and hail, large temperature drops and heavy rain. Winters, however, are usually very stable, but rather damp and often cloudy.

Melbourne is home to many of Australia's best-known landmarks, such as the Melbourne Cricket Ground, the National Gallery of Victoria and the World Heritage-listed Royal Exhibition Building. It is also the birthplace of Australian impressionism, Australian rules football, and the Australian film and television industries. More recently, it has been recognized as a UNESCO City of Literature and a global centre for street art, live music and theatre. It hosts major annual international events such as the Australian Grand Prix, the Australian Open and the Melbourne Cup, and also hosted the 1956 Summer Olympics and the 2006 Commonwealth Games. Due to it rating highly in entertainment, tourism and sport, as well as education, health care, research and development, Melbourne consistently ranked as the world's most liveable city for much of the 2010s.
