Track 12: Biochemistry and Molecular Biology

By controlling information flow through biochemical signalling and the flow of chemical energy through metabolism, biochemical processes give rise to the complexity of life. Over the last 40 years, biochemistry has become so successful at explaining living processes that now almost all areas of the life sciences from botany to medicine are engaged in biochemical research.

Today, the main focus of pure biochemistry is in understanding how biochemical molecules give rise to the processes that occur within living cells, which in turn relates greatly to the study and understanding of whole organisms. Biochemistry has advanced, especially since the mid-20th century, with the development of new techniques such as chromatography, X-ray diffraction, dual polarisation interferometry, NMR spectroscopy, radio isotopic labelling, electron microscopy, and molecular dynamics simulations. These techniques allowed for the discovery and detailed analysis of many molecules and metabolic pathways of the cell, such as glycolysis and the Krebs cycle.

Track 13: Clinical Pharmacy

Recognition of the practice of clinical pharmacy by the profession has led to our professional bodies publishing statements aimed at standardising pharmacy practice. These statements were developed by the profession to bring uniformity to the practice of clinical pharmacy. However they outlined what pharmacists want from clinical pharmacy, there was little input from clinical colleagues or patients about what they wanted from clinical pharmacy.

Additionally, Europe is now facing increasing competition from emerging economies: rapid growth in the market and research environments in countries such as Brazil and China are contributing to the move of economic and research activities to non-European markets. The geographical balance of the pharmaceutical market – and ultimately the R&D base – is likely to shift gradually towards emerging economies.

Thanks to advances in science and technology, the research based pharmaceutical industry is entering an exciting new era in medicines development. According to an international research company, in 2012 the size of the global pharmaceutical market reached $940 billion. In monetary terms it grew by 6%. In the future the sector is expected to grow at no less than 3% to 4% a year and if this happens the market will reach $1.2 trillion in 2016 and up to $1.5 trillion by 2020. Another research company, Business Monitor International, has made a forecast for the size and geographical composition of the global pharmaceutical market in 2020. Representing a thriving sector of Singapore’s economic growth, the biopharmaceutical sector contributed about S$22.8 billion in output in 2011. Compared to 2010, the biopharmaceutical sector expanded by more than 30% in 2011. According to Datamonitor, Singapore was the third fastest growing nation globally in the export of pharmaceutical goods from 2000 to 2010.

Leading biopharmaceutical companies (including Abbott, GlaxoSmithKline, Lonza, MSD, Novartis, Pfizer and Sanofi-Aventis) have chosen to make Singapore their global manufacturing base. These companies operate multi-purpose plants with the capability to manufacture a wide range of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), biologics and nutritionals. The country has also made significant inroads in biologics manufacturing, with Novartis, Baxter, Lonza, GlaxoSmithKline and Roche announcing their investments to set up major biologics facilities that amount to S$2.2 billion in capital expenditure. To date, all pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities that have commenced commercial operations have received validation from international regulators such as the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the European Medicines Agency (EMEA) and the Japan Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Agency.

Singapore, a small island nation in the South China Sea with a population of 5.5 million, has recently become a hot spot for sophisticated pharmaceutical research and manufacturing. In 2013, the country had an average purchasing power parity (PPP) per-capita GDP of over $61,000, about $10,000 more than in the U.S. Healthcare expenditure in Singapore was over $12 billion in 2013, representing 6% of GDP and approximately equal to healthcare spending in Thailand – which has a population 12 times as large. Total healthcare spending is expected to sky rocket to almost $22.5 billion by 2018. Per-capita healthcare expenditure has increased almost 300% over the past decade to more than $2,400 in 2013, second only to Japan in the Asian region. The country’s healthcare system was ranked #6 worldwide by the World Health Organization (WHO).
